For the second year in a row, Tonkawa’s Buc boys basketball team is just three wins away from a trip to the Class 2A state tournament. So what are their chances.
According to Head Coach Mike Deckman, they’re just as good as the rest of the teams out there.
“For us to win, we have to shoot the ball well, watch our turnovers, show up and play well. If we can survive this week, we’ve got what it takes to win it all,” Deckman said.
The Buc boys, who were Consolation Champions of the Class 2A regional that featured four of the top eight teams in the whole class.
It doesn’t get any easier. That’s why Deckman is saying what he is saying.
The Bucs face seven ranked Pioneer at 8 p.m. Thursday at Stillwater.
If they win, they’ll probably meet top-ranked Pawnee at 3 p.m. Friday at Stillwater.
And to get to state, they would face the loser between Friday night’s teams Dale and Chisholm.
Don’t look past Pioneer, Deckman says.
“Pioneer is freaking good,” Deckman said, “They’re athletic and they can jump.”
Chisholm, Pioneer, Dale and Pawnee are four of the top eight teams all in the area in which the Buc boys are participating.
And that’s why Deckman says if the Bucs survive this week, they’re perfectly capable of winning it all.
“I’m just glad we survived the regional final vs. Fairview,” Deckman said, “I still don’t know how we won. But we survived and were given a second chance.
This time of year, any win is a good win. From here on out, it’s all gravy.”
The Buc boys are 17-8 going into this weekend’s area tournament at Stillwater.
Meanwhile, the season for the Lady Bucs came to an end in the frst round of Regionals at Chisholm.
Coach Mark Huster’s charges fnished the season with 13 wins and 10 losses. All ten losses came to teams who are still in the playoffs, he said.
“I thought we had a good year, we just got a tough draw in regionals,” Huster said.
