Jake continued his amazing year in wrestling.  This weekend at the State Fairgrounds he won the 189lb State Wrestling Championship.  He is Tonkawa’s sixth state champion.  His dad, Steve was Tonkawa’s frst State Champion in 1979.  Jake fnished the year at 27-0.

Only 8 wrestlers qualify for State and Jake had beaten all of them at least once.  That is a good thing and a bad thing.  It is usually hard to beat someone more than once because they will wrestle you differently and they are better prepared.  After people wrestle Jake once they become very defensive and very hard to score on.

His frst match was against a Pawhuska wrestler, he is the most defensive kid in the bracket.  Jake only won by a few points in their first meeting.  Jake dominated from the start to win 10-3.  His second match was a wrestler from Kingfsher.  In my opinion the second best wrestler at the weight.  What a match it was.  Jake took him down and the fght was on.  He attempts to turn him and somehow he ends up on his back.  He is defnitely in a pickle; he is in a tight headlock and can barely move but manages to hold on till the end of the period.  The second period his opponent chooses the bottom position and escapes quickly to make the score 2-6.  Jake manages to come back and tie the score in regulation to put the match into overtime.  Overtime is a one minute period and the first wrestler to score wins.  Jake gets the takedown for the victory.  Jake did a great job of not going into panic mode and making the situation worse.  He showed great character and confdence in his comeback.  The finals match was complete domination by Jake.  He won 11-3 and got a major decision.
