Playing basketball games has been a challenge so far in 2010. Nearly half of the regularly schedule games have been re-scheduled -- some due to a longer than usual football season and other due to inclement weather.
Both Girls Head Coach Mark Huster and Boys Head Coach Mike Deckman say “no problem.”
Their players are ready to play when the occasion arises.
Both teams face a four game gauntlet this week.
They were at Yale Tuesday night. That was both teams’ first action since a DCLA sweep a week ago.
The Bucs host Crescent Thursday, go to Woodland Friday and then host Frontier Saturday.
“Of the eight games left on our schedule, five of those teams are ranked,” Deckman said, including Crescent and Frontier this week.
“Our kids are itching to get back on the court,” Deckman said, “It’s just a process we’ve gotta play
through. We’re playing better and I like our chances down the stretch.”
One of the positives Deckman points to is defense. The Bucs are not only shooting better but they’re
only giving up 43 points per game defensively.
Tonkawa should get district assignments Thursday, Feb. 4. Both Deckman and Huster are hoping to host the district at Tonkawa.
And the girls.
Well, practice for the girls has been a little easier, Huster said.
Why?
“Our second, third and even fourth strings are as good as a lot of people’s first teams, so our girls get a good workout regardless of game situations,” Huster said.
Huster said this week’s four game lineup is “very winnable” for the Lady Bucs.
He predicts Newkirk, Chisholm and Drumright will be in the regional with Tonkawa.
“Our girls continue to work hard,” Huster said, “even without games.” He pointed to the speed and agility of the Lady Bucs as a positive, especially during practice when talent is so even from top to bottom.
