If the North Country Tournament wasn’t tough enough, this week’s stretch for Tonkawa’s basketball games doesn’t get any easier.

Both teams entered Tuesday night’s game vs. DCLA with identical 8-4 records.

The girls were third and the boys fifth in the North Country Tournament -- one of the toughest fields for both teams ever.

“We’ve gotten a lot better,” boys head coach Mike Deckman said Tuesday morning. “Our kids learned a lot from the Alva game.”

Against Alva in the first round of the tournament, the Bucs lost a 13-point lead and fell by two points at the buzzer.

“The kids won three in a row after that,” Deckman said, “they did a good job of recuperating from that loss.”

So where are the Buc boys at this point of the season? “We’re better than we were a week ago and that’s our goal as the season progresses. It keeps us focused.”

Both the boys and girls face tough opponents to end the week.

The first of four games this week was played Monday night vs. Woodland with both teams posting easy wins.

The Bucs will host Newkirk Friday and Fairview Saturday.

Girls coach Mark Huster said his girls were “playing real well.” In the North Country, Tonkawa finished third behind second ranked Pawnee and third ranked Newkirk.

And Guymon, whom the girls beat for third place had lost only two tournament games all season until Saturday afternoon.

“We have three big games this week,” Huster said, pointing to 15th ranked Class A DCLA Tuesday night, second ranked Class 2A Newkirk Friday night and 12th ranked Class 3A Fairview Saturday night.

“Our kids have been playing really good defense and taking care of the ball.” And those are keys to Tonkawa Lady Bucs’ continued success, Huster said.
