The Dewar Dragons and their fans have never been to Buc Stadium.

So why not show them what it's like when you roll into Buc Country.

This second round Class A  playoff game is pivotal to both teams.

Tonkawa is 10-1. Dewar is 10-1.  The Bucs have been to the playoffs 16 years straight and have won 11 district championships during those same years.

Dewar is making that 200-mile-plus trip in hopes of knocking the Bucs out of title contention just as we did them
in 2000. The Dragons lost to the Bucs in 2000, except the game was at Dewar.

This is a game where the atmosphere and crowd noise might make a difference.

It has to be intimidating to roll into Buc Country for the first time and experience.......

  • The midfield Buc flag painted to perfection by Steve Randall and David Fruits.
  • The five state championships (1952, 1953, 1999, 2000, 2005) recorded at the entrance to the stadium by Dwight Turner.
  • The flags waving atop Buc Stadium, the armory, schools, porches and businesses around town.
  • The booster signs pasted all over town and on every fence row leading to the stadium.
  • Mr, Buc (David Fruits) and his Bucmobile leading the Bucs onto the field in pre-game warm-ups with the team's favorite tunes.
  • The Buc flag bearers  speeding in front to lead the Tonkawa team onto the field.
  • The electricity of the cheerleaders.
  • The excitement of the band.
  • Jack Evans announcing "Here come the Buccaneerzzzzz."

Let me tell you folks, that's an imposing mystique for any high school football team, especially one coming to Tonkawa for the first time.

But we can do better.

As a crowd, we need to be as rowdy and mouthy as we were vs. Woodland, Pawnee and Morrison this year. We need to root for our Bucs, but we also need to be loud when Dewar has the ball.

We need those foot-stomping, rip-roaring crowds like we had when we upset defending State Champion Washington 12-10 in 1997 or won another district championship in overtime over Woodland in 1996 by 28-25 or held on for a 14-7 state championship over Turpin in 1999.

Let's all put on our favorite black and orange and go to Buc Stadium ready to help Tonkawa pick up its 11th win and continue
the march to a sixth Class A title!

Mark Rodgers calls Dewar's Ronnell Lewis the best player in all of Class A football.

Buc head coach Mike Kirtley doesn't disagree.

Tonkawa hosts the Dragons 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Buc Stadium. Both teams come into the game with identical 10-1 records.

"Ronnell Lewis is big, fast and strong," Kirtley said, "They play him at middle linebacker on defense and let him go to the ball. And on offense, they just hand it off to him and let him do his thing. He has a pretty good surrounding cast around him, too," Kirtley continued.

Tonkawa Takes Control In Playoff Game Early PDF Print E-mail

TONKAWA — Taking charge from the opening kickoff, the Tonkawa Buccaneers won the opening round in the Class A state playoffs Friday by defeating the visiting Foyil Panthers 34-7.

The Bucs took possession after the kickoff at their own 28-yard line and systematically moved 72 yards in nine plays to score a touchdown. They never were seriously threatened after that.

The easy first-round victory was a pleasant turnaround for Tonkawa faithful, who had their hearts broken in the first round by losing on the last play of the game in each of the past two years,

The Bucs' Colby Ellis scored the first touchdown of the game, running two yards for the six points. An attempt to run for a two-point conversion came up short and Tonkawa held a 6-0 lead before Foyil had a chance at the ball.

Ellis was to figure in all of the Bucs' touchdowns, passing for one and running for the other four.

Dragons, Lewis travel to No. 2 Tonkawa PDF Print E-mail

To opponents, Dewar may seem like a one-man team.

Ronnell Lewis is certainly worthy of the title. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound running back ranks third in the Tulsa World Preps by the Numbers in rushing (2,219 yards), touchdowns (33) and tackles (136).

“He’s definitely a special breed,” Dewar coach Josh Been said. “Everyone knows he is going to get the ball. But he isn’t our only threat.”

There is plenty of talent around Lewis, particularly on defense.

Micky Bullard, a tight end/ fullback on offense and linebacker on defense, is responsible —along with offensive linemen Mike Miller, Christian Craig and Austin Britt—for opening holes for Lewis.

Bullard and Willie Celestine are both four-year starters at linebacker and the nucleus of the Dragons’ defense, Been said.

Cornerback Kevin Settlemyer has shut down receivers all year while Baron Fox and Britt lead the team in interceptions with five and three, respectively.

Seventh-ranked Dewar travels to second-ranked Tonkawa on Saturday.

“We’ve been there before.

We know what it takes to win,” Been said. “You can’t say enough about the tradition at Tonkawa.”

Bucs' Early Intensity Difference In Foyil Win PDF Print E-mail

To say Buc Head Coach Mike Kirtley was happy with the Bucs' performance against Foyil is an understatement.

At least for the first half.

Tonkawa led 27-0 after just two quarters.

"Our kids were pretty intense early in the game. I was happy with our first half of play. Our communication was good and our offense went according to plan. It was good having Kramer (Simpson) back."

Simpson, however, didn't play much the second half ~ but that was more due to the score than anything else.

Senior Colby Ellis was in on all five Tonkawa scores — running for four of them and passing for another.

The Bucs left little in doubt, scoring on their first four possessions to run up the 27-0 halftime lead.
