The wrestlers qualifed 8 for state and placed 3 wrestlers in the top 4 positions.  Perry continued their impressive string of 7 championships in a row.  Casia Hall was second followed by Pawhuska and the Bucs fnished 4th by only 4 points.  With the exception of one all wrestlers won at least one match at the tournament.  The team will only lose two wrestlers but they are extremely productive wrestlers.  Seniors Kramer Simpson and Jose Martinez will be truly missed next year.  Jose started wrestling in the 8th grade.  He qualifed for state this year and last year he was only a match away from qualifying.  He lead by example by always working hard and never missing practice.  Kramer had a tough wrestling career.  His freshman year he was injured after only 12 matches, his sophomore he was 20-0 and got injured again.  His junior...

Jake continued his amazing year in wrestling.  This weekend at the State Fairgrounds he won the 189lb State Wrestling Championship.  He is Tonkawa’s sixth state champion.  His dad, Steve was Tonkawa’s frst State Champion in 1979.  Jake fnished the year at 27-0.

Only 8 wrestlers qualify for State and Jake had beaten all of them at least once.  That is a good thing and a bad thing.  It is usually hard to beat someone more than once because they will wrestle you differently and they are better prepared.  After people wrestle Jake once they become very defensive and very hard to score on.

Not sure what Tonkawa’s Jake Love has in store for the spring, but it’s going to be tough to equal what he’s already accomplished.

Love earned an 11-3 victory in the 3A finals at 189 against Little Axe’s Dustin Hawkins to give Tonkawa its first state champion since 2001.

Love, a junior, was the star running back and linebacker for the Tonkawa club that earned the Class A state title in football.
